A newborn life expectancy number includes every risk from birth onward. A 60-year-old remaining-life number starts at age 60, after six decades of earlier risks have already been passed.
That is why remaining life expectancy can feel higher than people expect at older ages.
For retirement, insurance, savings, housing, caregiving, or estate planning, the average is only one anchor. Many planners also test longer-life scenarios because living well past the average can be financially important.
